Former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani enumerated his six steps for effective leadership in an address entitled "Leadership in Difficult Times" Wednesday Giuliani delivered the address in Stude Concert Hall in Alice Pratt Brown Hall. About 750 people — including about 220 students — attended the speech, which was sponsored by the Baker Institute for Public Policy. Giuliani's first two steps were integrity and optimism. "You've got to be able to visualize an optimistic future in order to get there." he said. "The power of offering solutions is so great that you have to understand that to be a good leader." Giuliani listed the other steps as courage, preparedness, teamwork and communication. He said preparedness is particularly important in dealing with terrorism. Giuliani was mayor of New York during the Sept. 11, 2(X)1 terrorist attacks. "(Terrorists] have to try to figure out how to surprise us," he said. 'Th i s makes the job of homeland security very difficult because you can't anticipate everything. But if you anticipate everything else, you'll be able to handle the unanticipated."
